Materials Manager

The Materials Manager is responsible for the overall availability of purchased materials per planned or forecasted production use or internal consumption, within established schedule, inventory value, and quality guidelines. Responsibility starts at PO and continues through to Warehouse and successfully kitted and distributed to the floor and then out the door to customers.


  • Assign or provide work direction for Buyer / Planner to ensure material availability for current demands.
  • Negotiate price and quality contracts with new or existing vendors.
  • Work closely with Manufacturing Engineering to foster existing vendor relationships and develop new vendor relationships.
  • Interface with Engineering, Manufacturing, Sales and Marketing on latest industry trends.
  • Provide feedback to Production and Inventory Control regarding availability and status of current requirements.
  • Work closely with Production Planners, Product Management and Production Supervisors to understand current business need and production status.
  • Derive demands for purchased materials based on the master production schedule, current inventory positions and outstanding purchase orders, and generate a procurement plan optimized for schedule, cost and inventory position.
  • Release Purchase Orders to vendors based on derived demands, purchasing criteria and management input.
  • Recommend material or procurement strategies that benefit the company in cost, schedule or quality.
  • Ensure timely and accurate transactions of all material receipts on an MRP II or equivalent system.
  • Participate in review of discrepant material and coordinates supplier involvement as required.
  • Improve inventory turns in coordination with objectives established on an annual basis.


  • BS/BA degree in related major or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of 5- 7 years’ experience in an MRP II, Kanban or equivalent purchasing environment.
  • Knowledge of Electronics & Contract Mfg. environment is desired.
  • Knowledge of, or experience in inventory management practices.
  • Must be fluent in a Microsoft Office environment, excel use at an advanced level
  • Association with a professional purchasing organization is highly desired.
  • MRP II training and experience are highly desired.
  • Kanban training and experience are highly desired.
  • Quality training in a Kaizen, ISO-9000, AS9100, Six-Sigma or similar program is highly desirable.
  • Experience within a highly technical production environment is highly desirable.
  • APICS training or certification is desirable.
